Overview

This route offers full or partial scholarships set up by China’s Ministry of Education under bilateral education agreements or cooperation frameworks with foreign governments, institutions, universities, or international organizations.

Details

  • Supported categories — The Bilateral Program can fund undergraduate, graduate (Master/Doctoral), general scholar, and senior scholar applicants. Check your home-country dispatching authority to see which categories are available this year.
  • Language of instructionUndergraduate programs are taught in Chinese. Graduate and non-degree tracks are usually in Chinese, though some majors may be offered in English.
  • Length of funding — Generally 4–5 years (undergraduate), 3 years (Master), 4 years (Doctoral), and 1 year (scholars). Language-study periods are typically 1–2 years. Timeline

Plan to apply between early January and early April. Exact cut-offs vary by dispatching authority each year—check with the authority in your country for the official deadline.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Non-Chinese citizenship and good health.
  • Undergraduate: high-school graduate, under 25.
  • Master’s: Bachelor’s degree holder, under 35.
  • Doctoral: Master’s degree holder, under 40.
  • General scholar: under 45 with high-school diploma or above.
  • Senior scholar: Master’s degree or associate professor (or above), under 50.

Required Documents

  • Chinese Government Scholarship Application Form (Chinese or English).
  • Passport bio page (valid > 1 year), plus latest Chinese visa page (if applicable).
  • Highest graduation certificate. Current students submit a certificate of enrollment and academic performance record. If documents aren’t in Chinese/English, attach a notarized CN/EN translation.
  • Transcripts (with notarized CN/EN translations if needed).
  • Language proof (if available): HSK / IELTS / TOEFL score report.
  • Undergraduate applicants: Submit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) Score Report. (Mandatory assessment subjects are listed in the CSU 2026 Undergraduate Bilateral Programs brochure.)
  • Study/Research plan in China (CSU’s Study Plan template). Minimum length: ≥200 words (undergraduates), ≥500 words (scholars), ≥800 words (graduates). Write in Chinese or English.
  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form (Chinese/English) with blood test report, issued after Oct 1, 2025. Complete all items exactly as required; forms without a photo with seal, hospital seal, and doctor’s signature are invalid. Bring the original at registration.
  • Non-criminal record certificate (Chinese/English) with official stamp, issued after Oct 1, 2025.
  • Two recommendation letters (Chinese/English) from professors/associate professors for Master’s, Doctoral, and senior-scholar applicants.
  • Applicants under 18: provide legal guardian documents in China (Letter of Guarantee).
  • Art materials: Music applicants submit their own works; Fine Arts applicants provide 2 sketches, 2 color paintings, and 2 additional works.

Funding

Full scholarship includes tuition, accommodation, medical insurance, and a monthly stipend:

  • Undergraduate: RMB 2,500/month
  • Master: RMB 3,000/month
  • Doctoral: RMB 3,500/month
  • General Scholar: RMB 3,000/month
  • Senior Scholar: RMB 3,500/month

Partial scholarship covers some of the above items.

How to Apply

  1. Apply via your country’s dispatching authority for the CGS Bilateral Programs opportunity.
  2. Email CSU for pre-admission: send all required documents to csc@csu.edu.cn with subject line “[Name] + CSC Pre-admission Application.”
  3. Complete the CGS online application:
    • Visit campuschina.org → “Scholarship Application for Students” to create an account and log in.
    • Fill out and submit the CGS Application Form, then print a copy.
    • Ask your dispatching authority for the Agency Number and specific system instructions.
    • Select CENTRAL SOUTH UNIVERSITY as your FIRST OPTION.
  4. Submit the full application package to your dispatching authority before the deadline.

Important note: Only recommended candidates forwarded by dispatching authorities are considered. Applicants with a Pre-admission Notice are usually placed at that host university; those without may accept CSC placement at another university.

Important Notes

  • After arrival in China, scholarship recipients cannot change the host university, major/field, or study duration shown on the Admission Letter.
  • Eligible applications go to universities for placement. CSC may adjust a candidate’s host university, field, category, or duration based on country quotas, university capacity, programme length, and applicant profile.
  • Applications including a Pre-admission Letter will be sent to the issuing university for placement confirmation. (Please choose CENTRAL SOUTH UNIVERSITY as your FIRST OPTION.)
