Overview

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are selective, jointly delivered master’s programmes run by international groups of universities. Scholarship recipients follow a mobility track across at least two countries in the consortium and graduate with a joint or multiple degree issued by the partner institutions.

Details

  • Delivered by a consortium of (at minimum) three higher-education institutions in three different countries.
  • Students must complete mobility in at least two different countries (with at least one in an EU Member State or a country associated to Erasmus+).
  • Teaching language(s), course structure, and local academic calendars vary by programme.
  • Graduates receive a joint degree (single diploma issued by at least two institutions) or a multiple degree (two or more diplomas from the institutions where they studied).
FAQ

Timeline

(Each EMJM sets its own dates — use the programme’s website.)

  • Programme search: year-round (most calls publish between Oct-Dec).
  • Applications due: commonly Jan-Feb for a start the following autumn.
  • Results & visas: spring-summer.
  • Start of studies: typically August/September.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to applicants of all nationalities (admission rules are set by each consortium).
  • You must meet the academic prerequisites and language requirements of the specific EMJM.
  • Some tracks expect relevant background (e.g., specific bachelor’s fields, prerequisite courses, or portfolio).
  • There is no EU-level cap on how many EMJM programmes you may apply to; individual universities may set limits for applications to their own institution.
  • Admission and scholarship selection are merit-based and handled by each consortium.

Required Documents

(Exact list varies by programme; check the programme page.)

  • Diploma(s) and transcripts (with official translation if required).
  • Proof of language proficiency (according to the track’s language[s]).
  • CV/Resume and motivation statement.
  • Recommendation letters (number and format set by the consortium).
  • Passport/ID and any additional materials requested (e.g., portfolio, GRE/GMAT, writing samples).

Submit documents directly to each consortium through its application portal. There is no separate EU-level form for the scholarship; it’s integrated in the programme application.

Eligible Countries

  • All Nationalities are Eligible!
  • "Programme Country" Students: Nationals from EU Member States and third countries associated with the Programme: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia, Türkiye.
  • "Partner Country" Students: Nationals from all countries outside the EU Member States and third countries associated with the Programme. You can find a list of all countries here.

Funding

What the EMJM scholarship provides (managed by the consortium):

  • Participation costs covered (tuition, registration, and any mandatory insurance/services charged by the consortium).
  • Monthly contribution to living costs: €1,400 per month (for up to 24 months, depending on programme length).
  • Contribution to travel/visa/installation costs: provided within the scholarship budget according to the consortium’s payment schedule.

Important funding notes:

  • The monthly living contribution is not paid for periods spent in your country of residence; additional limits may apply when a partner-country scholarship holder studies in another partner country (programme-specific rules).
  • Scholarships cannot be extended beyond the standard duration of the programme.
  • You cannot combine this scholarship with another EU grant for the same study period/activity.

How to Apply

  • Find a programme: Use the official Erasmus Mundus catalogue and shortlist suitable EMJMs.
  • Check requirements & deadlines: Each consortium sets its own criteria and dates.
  • Apply via the consortium portal: Submit the admission + scholarship application together (follow the programme’s instructions on documents and file formats).
  • Selection & placement: If selected, you will receive an admission/award offer specifying your mobility track and any conditions.
  • Visas & enrolment: Follow the consortium’s guidance for residence permits, insurance, housing, and arrival.

Important Notes

  • Your status (Programme vs. Partner Country) can affect the specific scholarship amount for travel/installation costs and whether certain residency rules apply. If you have spent more than 12 months in a Programme Country in the last 5 years, you might be considered a Programme Country applicant.
  • Mobility is mandatory: your study plan will include at least two different countries within the consortium; failing mobility requirements can jeopardize the scholarship/degree.
  • Language matters: some tracks are fully in English; others require additional languages (coursework, internships, or thesis location can influence this).
  • Degree type differs by programme: verify whether you will receive a joint degree or multiple national diplomas.
  • Deadlines are firm: late or incomplete files are usually not considered.
  • Recognition & visas: factor in time for legalization/recognition of prior degrees and visa appointments in multiple countries.
  • Programme-specific rules apply: always defer to your consortium’s scholarship terms for payment schedules, academic-progress requirements, and mobility specifics.
