Overview

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the most prestigious fully funded awards in the world. Every year, about 80 scholarships are given to outstanding students from outside the UK to study any postgraduate program at the University of Cambridge.

Most scholarships (around two-thirds) are awarded to PhD students. There are two main application rounds: one for US applicants (about 25 awards) and one for international applicants (about 55 awards).

The program was created in 2000 through a historic $210 million donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Since then, over 2,000 scholarships have been awarded to students from more than 100 countries.

The mission of the Gates Cambridge program is simple: to build a global network of future leaders who are committed to improving the lives of others.

Details

Scholars are chosen based on four main criteria:

  • Exceptional academic ability
  • Strong reasons for their chosen course
  • A commitment to improving the lives of others
  • Leadership potential

Currently, about 250 scholars from 50+ countries are studying at Cambridge under this program. There’s also a strong alumni community of more than 1,700 Gates Cambridge graduates worldwide.
