
Every year, about 80 scholarships are given to outstanding students from outside the UK to study any postgraduate program at the University of Cambridge.
Most scholarships (around two-thirds) are awarded to PhD students. There are two main application rounds: one for US applicants (about 25 awards) and one for international applicants (about 55 awards).
The program was created in 2000 through a historic $210 million donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Since then, over 2,000 scholarships have been awarded to students from more than 100 countries.
The mission of the Gates Cambridge program is simple: to build a global network of future leaders who are committed to improving the lives of others.
Scholars are chosen based on four main criteria:
Currently, about 250 scholars from 50+ countries are studying at Cambridge under this program. There’s also a strong alumni community of more than 1,700 Gates Cambridge graduates worldwide.
