International students can apply anytime throughout the year:

  • Semester one (starts in March)

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission to a PhD program at Monash and qualify for the Maxwell King Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be one of the following:
    • An Australian citizen
    • A New Zealand citizen
    • An Australian permanent resident
    • A holder of a humanitarian visa
    • An international student
  • Submit a current-year application for a graduate research scholarship
  • Hold qualifications that align with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) standards
  • Show evidence of the ability to conduct independent research, typically demonstrated through a prior research project or thesis
  • Meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • A Bachelor’s degree (minimum 4 years) in a relevant field that includes a research thesis or project, with results equivalent to Second Class Honours Division A (H2A) or above
    • A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with a research component equivalent to ≥25% of one year full-time, and overall results equivalent to Second Class Honours Division A
    • A combination of qualifications, research publications, or professional experience deemed equivalent by the Graduate Research Committee (GRC)
  • Provide graded academic transcripts — results marked only as “pass/fail” or “competent” are not accepted
  • If transcripts are not in English, submit certified English translations (preferably NAATI-certified)
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency via approved test scores or by having completed a prior degree in English within the last 5 years
  • Comply with any applicable visa, sanctions, or research safeguard regulations as required for international study in Australia
