Overview

Monash University offers a group of prestigious graduate research scholarships to support both domestic and international students enrolled in a PhD or Master’s by Research program:

  • Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS)
  • Monash International Tuition Scholarship (MITS)
  • Co-funded Monash Graduate Scholarship (CF-MGS)

All three scholarships are awarded through the same application process and based on academic merit and research potential.

  • For MITS: International students only

Timeline

Semester 1 (March 2026 start): Applications open April 1, 2025 → close August 31, 2025

Semester 2 (July 2026 start): Applications open September 1, 2025 → close March 31, 2026

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for any of these scholarships, you must:

  • Be applying for, or currently enrolled in, a graduate research degree (PhD or Master’s by Research) at Monash University
  • Not be receiving any other scholarship or income exceeding 75% of the standard RTP Stipend, if applying for a living allowance
  • For international applicants: not be currently funded for tuition through another award
  • Be automatically considered when applying for a research program at Monash — no separate scholarship application is required
  • Note that these scholarships do not apply to coursework-based Master’s programs

English Language Requirements:

You must meet Monash’s English proficiency standards through one of the following:

  • IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 79 (Reading 13, Listening 12, Speaking 18, Writing 21)
  • PTE Academic: Overall score of 58 with no communicative skill below 50
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced: Overall score of 176, no skill below 169
  • OR: A degree taught entirely in English, completed within the last 5 years in an English-speaking country

Note: Home-based versions of English tests are not accepted.

Note: Some faculties may require higher minimum scores.

Entry Requirements

To qualify for admission to Monash graduate research (HDR) programs and be eligible for these scholarships:

  • You must hold qualifications that align with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) standards
  • You must meet at least one of the following:
    • A 4-year Bachelor’s degree with Honours (H1 or H2A) that includes a research project
    • A Master’s degree with a significant research component (typically 25% of full-time study), with a strong academic result
    • A combination of qualifications and/or professional experience assessed as equivalent
  • You must submit graded academic transcripts — results marked only as "pass/fail" or "competent/not competent" are not accepted
  • If your transcripts are not in English, provide certified English translations (preferably NAATI-certified)

Note: Applicants from certain disciplines (e.g. Clinical Psychology, Reproductive Science) must meet additional entry conditions.

  1. Academic transcripts and certificates from all post-secondary education
  2. Certified translations (if applicable)
  3. Proof of academic performance: class rank, GPA, thesis examiner reports (where applicable)
  4. Research proposal (approx. 500 words)
  5. Academic CV with research, publications, and academic history
  6. English language test scores or proof of English-medium education
  7. Proof of research or publications, including employer letters or Research papers
  8. Supervisor support, if applicable
  9. Certificates for prizes, awards, or scholarships (up to 5)

Eligible Countries

Applicants from all countries are eligible.

Funding

  • MGS and CF-MGS provide:
    • Annual living allowance: AU$36,063 (2025 rate)
    • Relocation allowance, if eligible
  • MITS covers:
    • Full tuition fees
    • One-time Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policy

Note: Actual funding combination depends on academic ranking and availability. You may receive a stipend only, tuition only, or both.

How to Apply

  1. Get pre-approval:
    • New applicants must first contact the relevant faculty at Monash and receive an invitation to apply.
  2. Explore suitable programs:
  3. Submit your application:
    • Complete your application through the Monash online portal. You'll also need to submit a graduate research scholarship application as part of the process.

Note: If you're applying from a restricted region (Crimea, Cuba, Donetsk, Iran, Luhansk, North Korea, Syria or South Sudan), submit your application through a Monash-registered agent or IDP office

Important Notes

  • These scholarships are for Master’s by Research and PhD programs only
  • Students are automatically considered for all eligible scholarships — no separate form needed
  • Selection is highly competitive, based on academic record, research potential, and supervisor support
  • International students may require extra documentation or faculty-specific approval
  • A non-refundable application fee of AU$125 applies
