Overview

Türkiye Scholarships is a government-financed higher education programme run by the Republic of Türkiye for international students. It combines university placement with a full scholarship package, giving successful applicants the chance to pursue a degree at Turkish universities without having to apply separately to each institution.

Its main goal is to offer talented students from around the world equal access to quality higher education in Türkiye, while also strengthening cultural, academic and economic cooperation between Türkiye and other countries.

Timeline

General Application Period (Full-time Associate, Bachelor, Master, PhD)

  • Application period: from 10 January to 20 February.
  • Evaluation of applications: carried out during March and April.
  • Interview period: interviews are conducted between April and June.
  • Announcement of results: typically in early August.
  • Initial procedures (document & visa processes, placements): during August.
  • Arrival and enrolment of scholarship holders in Türkiye: September (start of the academic year).

Research Scholarship (Short-term research stays)

  • 1st Period:
    • Applications accepted between January and March.
    • Evaluation and results announced in April.
  • 2nd Period:
    • Applications accepted between April and June.
    • Evaluation and results announced in July.
  • 3rd Period:
    • Applications accepted between July and September.
    • Evaluation and results announced in October.
  • 4th Period:
    • Applications accepted between October and December.
    • Evaluation and results announced in January of the following year.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible Groups

According to the official “Criteria & Scholarship Programs” page, the programme is open to:

  • Citizens of all countries (except Turkish citizens and former citizens, see below);
  • High-school graduates or students who are in their final year and will graduate by the end of the current academic year (before August);
  • Graduates and final-year students of Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes applying for higher levels;
  • Researchers and academics for the Research Scholarship.

Ineligible Groups

The following cannot apply:

  • Turkish citizens (including dual nationals) and those who have lost Turkish citizenship by decision of the authorities;
  • Individuals already enrolled in a programme at a Turkish university at the same level of study they wish to apply for (e.g. currently doing a Master’s in Türkiye and applying again for a Master’s).

Minimum Academic Achievement

Minimum grade/score thresholds (or national equivalent):

  • Associate degree & Bachelor’s applicants: at least 70%;
  • Master’s & PhD applicants: at least 75%;
  • Health Sciences (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy): at least 90%.

Age Criteria

You must also meet these age limits at the time of application:

  • Associate & Bachelor’s programmes: under 21 years old;
  • Master’s programmes: under 30 years old;
  • PhD programmes: under 35 years old;
  • Research Scholarship: under 50 years old.

Required Documents

All applications are submitted online through the Türkiye Scholarships Application System (TBBS). Every candidate must upload the following documents to their account:

  • A valid identity document, national ID card or passport;
  • A recent photo of the applicant taken within the last 12 months;
  • National exam results, if such exams are used or required in the applicant’s home country (e.g. university entrance exams);
  • A diploma or temporary graduation certificate for the highest completed level (or a certificate of expected graduation, where applicable);
  • A complete academic transcript showing courses and grades for each year/semester;
  • International test scores (such as GRE, GMAT, SAT, etc.) if the chosen programme or university asks for them;
  • International language test results (TOEFL, DELF or equivalents) if required by the chosen programme/university;
  • For PhD applicants: a research proposal and a sample of previous written academic work or research.

All documents must be uploaded in the format requested by the system; additional translations may be needed if the originals are not in English or Turkish.

Eligible Countries

Applicants from all nationalities may apply, except:

  • Turkish citizens (including dual citizens), and
  • Individuals who have formally lost Turkish citizenship.

Funding

Türkiye Scholarships provide a full package of financial support plus placement at a Turkish university. According to the official “Why Türkiye Scholarships?” page, the main benefits are:

  • University and programme placement – you do not need to apply separately to each university;
  • Tuition-fee exemption for the full duration of the programme;
  • Monthly stipend (amounts per month):
    • 4,500 TL for Associate and Bachelor’s students;
    • 6,500 TL for Master’s students;
    • 9,000 TL for PhD students.
  • Free accommodation in dormitories or state-supported student housing;
  • General health insurance for access to the public health system;
  • A one-year Turkish language course (Turkish preparatory year), enabling students to reach C1 level and study in Turkish or manage daily life more easily;
  • A one-time round-trip flight ticket (arrival and final return after graduation);
  • Participation in social, cultural and academic programmes, events and the Türkiye Alumni Network.

(For the separate Research Scholarship, only the monthly stipend is generally covered; tuition and other costs are usually not included.)

How to Apply

  1. Open an online application account
    • Visit the official Türkiye Scholarships website and create your personal account in the Türkiye Scholarships Application System (TBBS) with a valid email address and password.
  2. Fill in your profile and upload all required documents
    • Enter your personal details, education history and exam results.
    • Upload every required document (ID/passport, photo, transcripts, diplomas, exam scores, etc.).
    • It is strongly recommended that you also upload evidence of extracurricular activities, awards and achievements in different fields.
  3. Choose your preferred universities and programmes
    • Within the system, select your programme level (Bachelor, Master, PhD, etc.) and then list your preferred universities and departments in order of priority.
    • You can choose several programmes, but you should only select options that you realistically qualify for (field, grades, language, etc.).
  4. Write your Letter of Intent / Motivation
    • In the “Letter of Intent” section, explain:
      • why you chose Türkiye and your preferred programmes,
      • your academic interests and previous experiences,
      • your expectations, career goals and future plans, and
      • how studying in Türkiye will help you contribute to your country and the wider community.
  5. Review and submit your application
    • Carefully check every section (personal info, education, preferences, documents, letter of intent).
    • After you are sure everything is correct and complete, confirm and submit your application in the system.
    • Once submitted, your application moves into evaluation; you cannot edit it after the deadline.
