Overview

The NL Scholarship (NLS) — formerly Holland Scholarship — targets talented students from outside the EEA who want to pursue a Master’s in the Netherlands. At Radboud University, NLS offers an extra opportunity for strong candidates across selected programmes. The scholarship is co-financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Radboud University.

Important: At Radboud, NLS is always paired with the Radboud Scholarship Programme (RSP). You must apply for RSP as well. You can be awarded RSP + NLS or RSP onlyNLS alone is not possible at Radboud.

For 2026–2027, Radboud expects to award up to 12 NL Scholarships across English-taught Master’s programmes in these faculties:

  • Faculty of Arts (1)
  • Faculty of Law (1)
  • Nijmegen School of Management (2)
  • Faculty of Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies (1)
  • Faculty of Science (4)
  • Faculty of Social Sciences (3)
FAQ

Timeline

  • By 31 January 2026, 23:59 CEST — Submit your Master’s application in OSIRIS Application. Student Admissions will check your file and return it if the handling fee is due or if documents are missing/incorrect/illegible. Resubmit promptly.
  • By 14 February 2026, 23:59 CEST — Your application must be complete. Incomplete files are not considered. You’re advised to upload your English-proficiency proof by this date as well.
  • Around mid-April 2026 — You’ll receive the decision from Student Life & International Mobility. (Date may change.)

Eligibility Criteria

All English-taught Master’s programmes are eligible except Erasmus Mundus and joint-degree Master’s.

You qualify only if you:

  1. Hold a non-EU/non-EEA passport.
  2. Are not eligible for the lower EU/EEA tuition fee for any reason.
  3. Earned (or will earn) a Bachelor’s degree outside the Netherlands, have no Dutch degrees, and did not receive prior education in the Netherlands (exchange within a non-Dutch Bachelor’s is allowed).
  4. Meet the English-language requirements of your chosen Master’s.
  5. Have full admission to an English-taught Master’s starting 1 September 2026 (as stated in your formal admission letter).
  6. Have also applied for the Radboud Scholarship Programme (RSP) for 2026–2027, start 1 September 2026.
  7. Can meet visa conditions for the Netherlands.
  8. Will be enrolled full-time at Radboud for the academic year and programme for which the scholarship is awarded.

  • Bachelor’s diploma or equivalent
  • Official transcript for the Bachelor’s (or equivalent)
  • Sworn translations of diploma and transcript (if applicable)
  • Course descriptions for unfinished courses
  • Course descriptions for completed courses
  • Personal statement / motivation letter (programme-dependent)
  • Two reference letters (see Radboud reference guidelines)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • English-language certificate
    • You may apply without the certificate. If admitted and your email lists it as required, submit proof before the . If prior education proves proficiency, a separate certificate is not required.
  • Handling fee
    • Non-EU/EEA applicants must pay the handling fee before processing.

  • Amount: €5,000 (one-year grant; paid in the first year only; can be received once).

Note: This is not a full scholarship; living and study costs in the Netherlands are not covered by NLS. (Remember: at Radboud, NLS is combined with RSP; apply for both.)

  • In OSIRIS Application, indicate during your Master’s application that you wish to be considered for the NL Scholarship.
  • Programme admission and scholarship selection are separate processes. Admission does not guarantee an NLS award.

Selection criteria include:

Academic excellence

  • Strong results (grades, tests, publications)
  • Fit between your prior degree and the Master’s
  • Standing of the institution awarding your prior degree(s)

Ambition

  • Strength/relevance of your motivation letter
  • Evidence of promise through achievements or field experience
  • Life experience and/or extracurriculars (e.g., internships, volunteering)

References

  • Quality and substance of the two reference letters
